Today’s issue of La Recepción features our first-ever guest author and fellow hotel devotee Eric P!

Welcome to the lobby of the Hotel Washington. Located directly across the street from the White House, this lobby is home to politicians and tourists alike.

Lobby layout: long, slender, high gloss rectangular lobby with four large “golden” archways that divide the lobby lounge space from guest check-in.

The vibe: elegant, fresh, welcoming, and very active.

The crowd: leans towards tourists and folks hanging out for a cocktail, not a lot of people working. There are also many people coming into the hotel to head to the very popular roof bar/restaurant.

Business

Great for: checking emails and drinks with colleagues or clients.

Coffee: yes, available from the bar.

Music: yes, it’s quiet and spans all genres, usually upbeat and accessible to all.

Wifi: yes, free public wifi.

Charging access: limited, use the wall and floor lamps as guide to find the outlets.

Bathrooms: yes, downstairs on the lower level or one floor up on the Mezzanine level.

Leave your stuff alone to go to the bathroom? no, it’s a busy space with lots of traffic.

Callouts: the lobby can get loud with all the poeple coming and going.

Pleasure

Roof Top: accurately called Vue, the rooftop bar & restaurant overlooks the White House and Washington Monument. It’s a must see, ideally with a Martini in hand (menu).

La Piscina: no hotel pool.

Lobby Bar or Restaurant: a lobby bar, named Lobby Bar.

Menu: beer, wine, cocktails, and food.

Happy Hour: no (🥲)

Thirsty? try the Oaxaca Old Fashion. Milagro Reposado, Vidal Mezcal, Agave, Chocolate, Grapefruit Bitters.

Hungry? try the Impossible Burger with truffle mayo, lettuce, tomato, spicy aioli.

Fait Amusant

Origin: the Washington Hotel originally opened on April 4th, 1918.

Designed by: Carrère and Hastings architectural firm. The firm is also known for designing the New York Public Library.

Style: Beaux-Arts architecture which blends French neoclassicism with Renaissance and Baroque elements, combined with modern materials like iron and glass, made the style an important part of French culture until the late 19th century.

Look Up

This is a section serving as a reminder to take a pause in life and look up. We will be featuring hotel lobby ceilings. Shout out to reader Ben G. for the recommendation!
